linked 2013 | family life

so we took a little trip to daytona beach for a family reunion. and when big italian families are involved, getting everyone together at the same time and in the same place is no small feat. but it happened.

all i know is having a big family. and that is a good thing. growing up, we used to take a summer vacation trip every year to daytona beach, florida with my aunt + uncle and their three kids. four adults, six kids and about seven days spent at the pool, the beach and the boardwalk. sun + fun. and lots of good memories. plenty of other aunts, uncles and cousins would come from year to year. and finally after many years, we all got together in daytona beach for a big giant family reunion. all 79 of us.

so this is what a great, big family life looks like to me…

linked 2013 is a monthly blog project. check out what family life looks like to these ladies linking up with me this month: Amanda, Carla, Hanne, Heather, Janet, Jenn, Rhonda and Tracey.

tracey - Oh this looks like so much fun! I can FEEL the warm sun. What great memories!

rhonda - My favorite one is the one 33 years later :) AND i love that last one too. Looks like lots of fun!!!!

Neisa - Oh my gosh, how amazing is that to have so many generations together! Loved the photos, especially the reproduction of the one as kids.

Heather M. - that photo re-do is hilarious! sounds like a great trip! wish we were close to the beach like that.

Donna G. - My childhood photos from Daytona are red, too! What’s that about?? LOL!!

quinn’s 4 year old photo book

it arrived two weeks ago. i read it. and i cried.

it is quinn’s 4 year old photo book.

i created a whole entire book of photos, stories, drawings + memories from the year quinn was 4. i started with his 4 year old photos and his 4th birthday party and ended with the last few photos i took of him right before he turned 5. it is a giant 174 page book of quinn.

i was inspired by a few people to make this book. one was my friend, angie warren, and our conversations about documenting the details. she said that she could easily fill up a book with all the photos of the little details of her kids. i also take lots and lots of photos of my kids. and i love looking at all the pieces and parts of who they are in photos. so i gave myself permission to put all of these photos of quinn into a book just for him. to document his life in detail.

i was also inspired by another fabulous blogger, photographer and mom - kelle hampton. she makes yearly photo books for her kids too. and they are lovely. lucky me, i got to meet kelle last year at a book signing and she is just as sweet in person as she is on her blog. (by the way, if you haven’t read her book, you must run out now and get it!)

this is the first real photo book i have made for quinn. i have so many a million photos of quinn (and tate too). and up until now, none of them were printed anywhere. instead of continuing to feel overwhelmed, i decided to just begin right where i was. and that was in the middle of quinn’s 4th year. i worked on pages here and there. scanned artwork and entered blog posts about him into the book. and slowly this book began to take shape. and eventually became the epic novel that it now is.

this book is my gift to quinn. a documentation of his 4th year of life. i will go back and make photo books for his first three years. and every year i will make him another book.

(and yes, i am doing the same thing for tate. i’m up to my ears in his 2 year old book now…)

a little about this photo book:

how did you design this book?
it took me a long time to just figure out how i was going to make this photo book. i tired creating my own pages in photoshop, but it was way too time consuming for what i was trying to do. i also looked into a few different photo book websites, but most don’t let you add more than 100 pages. and i couldn’t customize my page layouts like i wanted to. i started creating this book using one photo book website, only to have to start over again because i was not happy with what i was making. but i was determined to find something that would work and thankfully i finally discovered the perfect solution for me… hello blurb! i used their free booksmart software that you download onto your computer. it was so easy to use because i could do the following:
1.) upload all the photos directly into booksmart or import them directly from lightroom
2.) use their page templates
3.) edit their page templates by moving photos, changing size, adding photos and text (and save these custom templates to use again later)
4.) make my own page templates (and save them to use again later)
5.) drag + drop photos into the page templates – by far the quickest and easiest way to get the photos in the pages

i used a combination of blurb’s pre-designed page templates and my own tweaking of these templates mixed with some of my own page template designs.

printing details:
i printed this book from blurb. it is a 13×11 hardcover image wrap book with 174 pages printed on standard paper. it was $3 more for the image wrap cover and it was worth every penny. as for pages, blurb prints up to 440 pages on standard paper and up to 240 pages on premium paper. that is more than plenty of pages for me. thank you very much blurb!

cover design:
quinn drew a picture for the cover. i just asked him to include the number 4 and his name. the rest was up to him. he also drew a family picture that i used for the back cover. i’m going to have him write his name and use it on the cover of his photo books each year. i think it will be fun to see how his handwriting changes through the years.

what did you include other than photos:
i started the book with the birthday letter to quinn that i write him every year. i also added any blog posts about him and text explaining some of the photos. i scanned his drawings and took some photos of his artwork. i made monthly collage pages of instagram/iphone photos of him. next year i’m going to interview him and print that at the end of the book on the last page.

this photo book and project life? why both?
i look at project life as our family journal. an account of our everyday life. what we are doing, seeing, hearing and loving every week. this photo book is all about quinn. not as many everyday details and stories, but lots + lots of photos that i didn’t use in project life. this is where they all go. just for quinn.

where do i start?
start with now. the current year. the current month. today. get into a good rhythm of making pages as the months go by. do it a little at a time and you won’t get overwhelmed. and then go back in time to fill in the gaps.

ETA: how much did this book cost?
the book was $115 for the 13×11 with 174 pages, hard back image wrap cover and standard paper, but i had a 20% off promo code so i only paid $92. the shipping was $10, but i also ordered two 8×10 softcover photo books at the same time so i don’t know if that changed the shipping cost. this might seem a little expensive, but this is a gift i’m going to give to both of my boys each year for their birthdays. it will be a gift that they will have forever. it will outlast the star wars figures, the legos and the angry bird games. i started off limiting myself in pages because i was worried about fitting everything into 100 pages or less with the first photo book company. but when i found blurb, i could create pages to my heart’s content (up to 440 standard pages!). i knew that the more pages i added would increase the price. but i decided to just focus on the memory keeping and not the cost. and having this book is worth every penny i paid for it.

some photos of just me and they boys taken by my friend, ali.
this book is filled with lots of memories. as we flipped though the pages together quinn kept saying “oh, i remember that!” it is such a great way to help him remember all the fun things about being four.
now i’m off to work on getting tate’s 2 year old book finished before he turns 4!

documenting my dream job

i lived my dream job. and it was an amazing experience. i was the full time sports nutritionist for the nba dallas mavericks (professional basketball team here in america). and it was even more than i could ever have hoped for in a job. i worked with some genuinely great people. i had an office right in the american airlines center where the team played. i traveled around the country with the team on their private airplane. i attended all of the games for the three seasons that i worked with the team. i visited every single nba team’s home court. i even got to put my master’s degree in sports nutrition to good use. and i still have some lasting friendships from those fun days with the team.

i took some photos when i worked with the mavericks. they are not the best photos because this was before i really knew what to do with a camera. i always had a love for taking photos and i just knew that someday this would all be over and i’d wish i had photos to document it all. so the photos i took are not the greatest, but they still tell my story. a story i’d like to share with my boys. and that is kind of difficult to do when your photos are all on random external hard drives.

so i decided to honor this time in my life. the time when lots of hard work finally met with the right opportunity. it was time to print these photos and tell my story. this was over 10 years ago. and life has taken me beyond this experience in my life. i know that today i’m exactly where i want to be and yet i’m so grateful for all the things that have happened in my life. it was time to print out my photos and document this part of my life.

i used becky higgins’ mini album in midnight. i added some journaling cards from the project life midnight edition core kit and printed some quote cards from elise. putting together the album was so simple and fast. i printed out my photos and slipped them in the pages along with the journaling cards. that was it. i was done. this entire project only took me a few hours total.

and i’m so happy to have this mini album to add to our collection of family photo books and memories.

i found some of my old business cards and slipped one in the cover and put one on the first page. i also printed out a card with a little about my story along with a few photos for the first page.

i love that i took these photos of the things that i saw and the place where i worked everyday. like the practice court, me at my little desk and the food area in the locker room that i was in charge of for the players.
more photos of the locker room, the training room and the rehab area.
the team airplane. i logged many miles on this plane and must admit that it was a fantastic way to travel – especially when you were the person in charge of ordering the food for the entire airplane. you never had to worry about not liking the meals.
on the road practice before the games. clearly not my best photography work, but still some great memories.
doing my job and taking care of the players.
love + basketball. i met my husband during the 2003 play-offs and these are some photos from that time. (and a stamp from ali edwards’ hello life stamps.)
some photos i took in the many cities i visited with the team. scaramanto, houston, chicago, new york city, salt lake city…
one unforgettable experience for me was my very first visit to new york city. i went with the team in january of 2002. just four months after the attacks on 9/11. i went with a few of the players and coaches to visit the site where the world trade towers had fallen. i had never seen these massive buildings, so i could not fully comprehend the emptiness that was left behind. but i will never forget standing on the special platform for the families and seeing the twisted metal, the cranes and the american flag. and the wall of dedications to the loved ones that were lost that day. it was a day i will never forget.
there are pages in my album filled with photos from games and with friends. all memories i will remember for a lifetime.

Donna G. - Fabulous, Tracy!! I didn’t know you did this in your former life. Here’s another example of how Project Life has come to our aid in recording our lives.

amy t schubert - Oh my word! What a FUN job! (I love Steve Nash and basketball in general)

So awesome that you have all these photos and stories documented too :)

Krystyn - What an awesome album!! I love the quote cards she used – they were perfect for each page!!

Jodi - so wonderful! what a great experience. hooray for project life!

chrystal - what a fun job, and how great that you could document it like this! I really enjoy your style, Tracy! Thanks for sharing!

Jocelyn Thompson - so love this! It inspires me to do one of my own. I have lots of pictures from a job I loved but have never compiled it into an album. Thank you for always giving such great inspiration!

rhonda - 1. HOW COOL that job was!!
2. Love that you documented it all for your kids
3. Love that it only took you a couple hours too :)

Janet Kemper - I Love this! What a fantastic job & what a great way to document it! I have a dream job right now, and was thinking about documenting it this way…this just confirms that I need to do it!

Christine N - This is really cool, thanks for sharing it! What a cool job, what beautiful memories, and a wonderful way to document it.

Vera - I love this album and what it represents! Unfortunately, I don’t have much (if any) photos of my previous job, i would love to have made an album like this.

Kristine V. - Such a cool project! Love your story and how you created this beautiful momento to share with your sons. Thanks for sharing!

brandee smith - How fun!!! Your layouts are always inspiring! Do you print your own journal cards? Do you recommend a printer?

tracey - Super fun to learn this about you T!!!!! What a fun experience in your life. So cool.

project life 2013 | weeks 17 + 18

project life is still going strong around here…

earlier this week i shared my simply white collection of 4×6 photo collage templates that i use every week in my project life pages. and these weeks below were no different. all of my photo collages were made using the simply white collection.

week 17: everyday life around here

left side:  photos of the boys watching tv in the playroom, tate smiling in some beautiful light and my week in review card.
this week i recorded my little video clip for a special video from becky higgins creative team for national scrapbooking day. i recorded the video horizontally and this is what the preview looked like on my iphone in my camera roll. so i just took a screen shot and printed it as a 3×4 image. and i also printed a card with tate’s new way of saying milk.
i love this quote because it is so true. especially with project life becoming such a big part of my everyday. and an iphone photo of dinner.
tate enjoying an ice cream cone in three simple photos. it is going to be a long + sticky summer.
right side:  quinn reading to tate (love this!) and some 3×4 photos + words from this week.
these are the little spinach veggie bites that tate eats every single night. my kids don’t eat vegetables (call it the curse of their mommy being a dietitian in her former life!) but tate will eat these. he apparently has no idea that they contain veggies. and they are good for him. i wanted to document this because it is such a big part of our everyday right now. i just love documenting the little things like this. (these are the dr. praeger’s spinach littles that i buy at whole foods and they are good.)
we all went to see quinn in his preschool letter parade this week.
for our weekly iphone photo collage this week i used 6 photos of quinn and his growing duck collection. (template included in the simply white collection.)

week 18:  mark’s 39th birthday and more everyday life.

left side: photos from mark’s birthday – the cake we made with the candles from the dollar store that quinn picked out and a family photo from mark’s birthday in the evening light outside by the front door (hello timercam app!).
my monthly calendar with the date for mark’s birthday circled and our anniversary with a heart around it. and my poor tate crying in my arms because he wanted so badly to play basketball on the court with his big brother.
a collage of photos from mark’s birthday celebration this week, including his birthday breakfast in bed, lots of cake and the birthday checklist that quinn wrote – with a little spelling help from me.
right side: flowers, food and more iphone photos.
iphone photos + words.
love this crazy light and the bokeh in this photo i took on our drive home from my parent’s house. and no, i was not the driver.
i had to document the little article about my week in the life book that was published in a dutch magazine. (you can read my blog post about it here.)

project life pages created with these supplies:

Petra - Gorgeous pages Tracy. Love all the white space really beautifully done. Do you ahve a recipe for your “green ones”?
Petra

Jean - looks great. i love the frame/white edging on the photos! my fav!
also love how you typed on the photo itself.

Azzari - I love the cleanness of your pages! I just started on this Project Life journey, and I am really loving it so far. Will have to share my spreads soon.

Scrumptious - Beautiful pages! I just found you through the Saturday Project Life Blog Hop and I think your album is stunning. I suspect I’m WAY too wordy to ever pull off this look, but I will definitely play around with it and see what I can come up with, because it looks so cool! What font are you using here?

rhonda - Every time you post more pages I love them even more! Love the cleanliness!

the simply white collection

i finally did it! i put together the photo collage templates that i love and use in my weekly project life layouts. and i’ve bundled them all up right here.

it is no secret that i love using white space to create a cohesive look to my project life pages. as my style has developed, i found myself using the same templates over and over for my project life pages. i can tell so many different stories within a 4×6 printed photo. and with a variety of photo collage designs and space to enter text, these templates really do enhance my everyday story telling for project life. so i have finally made all of these templates available for only $4 for the entire collection of 15 photo collage templates.

young c - Awesome! Love the look of your PL, so these are great! Thanks for sharing.

Fiona - Awesome! I love the white look on your pages and have actually been thinking about how I need to sit down and try and make some templates, but now I don’t need to! These are fantastic templates :)

Mandee J - These are so clean and awesome & I love how the photos will be the real stars using these templates!

Jessica - I love love love these. Thank you for putting them together for purchase.

Pedroza - Beautiful, love the clean look!

Natalie Turetsky - Live this. Love you. Live your style. And love you for sharing!! How can I get your little calendar cards and the week in review cards?

Natalie Turetsky - By live I mean LOVE. #stupidautocorrect!!

Cindy - Hi Tracy! These are awesome!

What software is required to use these templates?

Thanks!

tracy - You would need Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to use the .psd files.

project life 2013 | weeks 15 + 16

where in the world did the month of april go?

more of my project life pages. just keeping it simple as always…

week 15: mark + quinn went to a practice round at the masters golf tournament in augusta, georgia this week.

left side: i sent mark to the masters tournament with our little canon point + shoot camera and instructions to take lots of photos. and he did. yay! they met up with friends and had a great time.
i printed the masters logo onto a 3×4 card and added a photo of all the boys with a few words about the trip.
i love this photo with all the people, the trees and the golf course. it really gives a feel for the whole atmosphere. i lived in augusta for a year during my dietetic internship and passed this golf course everyday, but never got to see the inside. it was great to see what was hiding behind all of the tall trees.
right side: mark dropped off me and tate in jacksonville to visit my parents again while they were in georgia. these are some photos from our road trip and some iphone photos from the rest of the week. well, actually these are all iphone photos.
the proton therapy center where my dad is receiving treatment. amazing place with amazing people that took such great care of my dad. and that is tate on the couch waiting for my dad to finish his treatment.
a little card with the way quinn says “tate’s” and tate watching mark mow the lawn.
insert:  this week i added a project life 8×10 horizontal page protector with a photo of mark and quinn at the masters under some famous tree.
in the back i slipped in a picture quinn drew of the golf tournament. it is them in the stands watching the golfers play.

week 16: basketball, warm weather and family this week.

left side: quinn’s basketball game, pool days begin again and a little yoga for me. and of course, our week in review card.
some small 3×4 photos of quinn and a filler card from the amazing project life midnight core kit. i love everything about this kit!
right side: quinn’s preschool photos, a party with lots of cousins, girls night dinner and my weekly iphone photo collage.

mark got quinn a masters baseball hat. i took a photo of him and wrote a little something on the photo. (font is mank sans.)

tate finally started eating ice cream. he always used to refuse it, but now he loves it. (font is avenir and savu.) and this week was the boston marathon bombing. is is part of our history and our world, i wanted to include something about it. so i saw this quote on a news story and thought it was appropriate. and so true.

insert: i included an 8.5×11 page protector with a drawing quinn made of the dinosaur dig and volcano day at preschool.
on the back i slipped in quinn’s letter homework from this week. it was the letter q and he was so excited about it.

Kathy - Congratulations on being in FLOW………with your WITL Book. What a buzz to have your book printed in a magazine even if you couldn’t read what it said. Don’t you just love Lynette’s templates. That’s what did it for me last year as well and I purchased her templates and recently posted about my book here.

http://www.oureverydaylifeinpictures.blogspot.com.au/2013/04/week-in-life-2012-witl.html

I’ve done WITL for 4 years but this was my favourite format by far and I’m going to stick with the same every year now it makes me so happy looking through this book. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane, Australia

yin - Really love your all white background/themed PL pages!! Great pictures and how cute your capturing the children’s words/pronunciations. You will really love these when you look back! I’m going to try copying your PL style if you don’t mind. Thanks for the inspiration!

in the pages

so this is crazy. i mean really crazy.

back in december, i received an email from a writer for a dutch magazine called flow. she said that she writes a couple of features filled with reader tips on all things beautiful and inspiring, be it a project, a product or an experience. and she wanted to include my week in the life photo book for the ‘feel connected’ feature of their february issue.

what??? for real? um, yes please!

a few emails to her about where i got the inspiration for the project from (thank you to the amazing ali edwards) and the beautiful photo book template (thank you pinterest for helping me find nettio designs) and i tucked this all away until last week when a package arrived at my doorstep. a sweet package from far away.

the dutch issue of flow magazine!
and on page 57, there it is… a little photo of the cover of my week in the life photo book. and a little something about it written in a language i cannot read.  ha! oh how i wonder what it says!

flow magazine is sold nationwide in the netherlands and also in the dutch speaking part of belgium. and the international issue has just been released. you can view the english version of our their website and a little preview of the magazine here. the issue i’m holding in my hands is so fun + full of inspiring photos. i just might need to get my hands on the english version of this magazine soon.
